Lavender is one of the most popular & versatile herbs throughout time and has been used for many-many years (for over 2,500 years)....for many things ...it has been used in food and fragrance/aromatherapy,to relieve congested, Improves eczema and psoriasis, sinuses to ease stress to help induce sleep and relieve depression and still is... rubbed on the temples when diluted with a carrier oil or just smelling to relieve headaches, restores skin complexion and reduces acne....The worlds largest lavender producing area is Provence...Essential oils are extracted by steam distillation
In the book The New Healing Herbs it says lavender essential oil can be detected in the blood in as little as 5 minutes and that it is easily and quickly absorbed into the skin. 
During the Great Plague of 1665 Graverobbers would wash the victims clothing/belongings they stole in a mixture that contained lavender this mixture became known as Thieves Vinegar, which was thought to protect against the plague..... 
The Romans & Greeks liked using lavender in their bath & bathhouses,to fumigate sick rooms,rub the oil on their feet, deterring insects, burns or treat skin ailments, to dress war wounds....The Egyptians used it in mummification and cosmetics, massage oils, and medicines...Lavenders use was noted back as far as 77 AD by. Dioscordes, a Greek military physician tat had written down the uses
Lavender oil has been used for things like massage oils for sore muscles and joints. embalming fluid, sleep, calming, used topically on burns to soothe and help speed healing,soothing,aromatherapy, relieve the pain of neuralgia,killing head lice and fleas,warding off pestilence (a contagious or infectious epidemic disease that is virulent and devastating; specifically : bubonic plague)
According research it can kill bacterias like streptococcus,pneumococcus, diphtheria,typhoid etc... 
Fresh lavender was picked or bought and dried for many uses some saved in airtight containers to help keep it fresh longer ...Some women would put a small cloth bag of lavender in their cleavage to attract a suitor/boyfriend, some used it to clean with and some used it in cloth muslin bags that they hung in with their clothes in their wardrobes,or stuffed down in their bedding / linen. Potpourris & soap were made with lavender.

If you are taking tests and you need to be alert I suggest you don't use lavender before the test to calm your nerves ..It has shown in some research that those using lavender to relax tended to not do as well on their test as those who didn't use lavender.....Instead try wearing a necklace meant for essential oils and use Rosemary EO or maybe Peppermint EO and sniff away !
